Community Policing Committee Minutes of October 21, 2009 Meeting

Laurentian Valley Community Policing Committee

Minutes of Meeting

Date: October 21, 2009

Present: Elise, Dennis, Mike, Ken, Keith, Kevin, Marcel, Matt, Philip, Ken Brown

Regrets: Mary

Correction to September minutes: It should have been Shady Nook Recreation Center and not Rankin.

Also when speaking about the stop sign at Boundary rd, and Bruham. It should read that there would be A $10,000 cost (not OUR cost) and we are unsure if this cost would be split.

Motion to accept minutes after corrections made: Keith, seconded Kevin

We were to have Ton Haight from the Mason Child Identification Clinics at our meeting but Elise mentioned that he hadn’t gotten back to her. So Elise mentioned that she didn’t get to their last clinic which was in Killaloe on October 17, 2009. Anyway she did forward the information to everyone on the web-site and those that did look into it found it very interesting. The committee decided that we would still like to try and get Tom to a meeting and have him explain the process. So Elise will contact him again and see if we can get him to our next meeting.

Elise brought the golf shirts that were dropped off to be embroidered and picked up more for the new members and will take them in to be done.

Kevin didn’t give her a bill as he will bill once when all shirts are done.

Reports: Dennis CPAC meeting will only be held at the end of the month.

Discussion on the last large garbage pick-up. The committee members felt it was much better as far as quantity and how early items were put out. Mike Street the bylaw enforcement officer for Laurentian Valley did hand out some warnings, with a copy of the bylaw. Council members will be revisiting the issue of pinpointing the exact time line as to when items should be placed out for pick up as the guide lines are not real clear. So hopefully the next pick up will run even smoother.

Dennis did mention at council again about the Radar Board. Clause said he received 3 mother boards and none of them worked. So Dennis asked if it could be sent away, so that it could be fixed properly and up and running again for the spring. We will wait to see what happens.

Matt reported back about the Child Poverty Action Network. At our last meeting the concern was if there was a screening process when people applied or came in for i.e.: snowsuits, backpacks etc. and no there is no screening process.

Matt also brought in the newsletter from CPAN and it explains what they did and how many children they helped in 2008.

After a short discussion, Mike made a motion to join the Child Poverty Action Network. Seconded by Marcel and all were in favor.

Elise mentioned about an email she received from a friend about the #77 number to call from your cell phone to reach the police dispatch. The email was regarding a young woman being pulled over by an unmarked police car. Her parents always told her not to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, rather to wait until they get to a gas station etc. So after the unmarked car pulled in behind her she dialed #77 to inform the dispatch that she acknowledged the car behind her and that she was just going to get to the nearest gas station etc. The dispatch checked to see if there were any unmarked cars where she was and there weren’t , so the dispatch told her to stay calm and keep driving, that she had back up on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

Upon viewing this email Elise sent it to Mary and asked her if this was the case around here.

She in turn double checked with the OPP Comm. Centre in Smith Falls and was told that #77 is NOT correct.

So Elise is going to contact Beth Ethier and do more investigating on this and see what the correct number is and if this is even the case in our area.

Dennis and Ken Brown mentioned that there is no one available from council that sits on the Policing Committee to attend a meeting in November. So the committee Decided to wait until December to have their next meeting.

Ken and Dennis also mentioned that the Township Volunteer Christmas Party will be held at Alice and Fraser Recreation Center December 5, 2009.

Anyone interested in going is to contact Elise by November 14, 2009 and she will forward the numbers to Dennis.

Next meeting is December 9, 2009 at 7pm at the Township Office, on Witt Rd.

Motion to adjourn: Ken Seconded by Keith
