Laurentian Valley Water Works manages just over 14 kilometres of water main and branch lines in the Township. Laurentian Valley Water Works received its Certificate #2893 as a Water Distribution System Class 1 in November of 2000. On July 15, 2005 the system was reclassified as Water Distribution Subsystem Class 1 by the Ministry of Environment. The Drinking Water System Information number for Laurentian Valley Water Works is W260007465. This is the second report for 2008.

Laurentian Valley Township has a water servicing agreement with the City of Pembroke. The water is purchased from the City and distributed in the Stafford Village area, part of Pembroke Street East and part of Pembroke Street West. The City treats and tests the water at the Pembroke Filtration Plant on Riverside Drive and tests the water in their distribution system. The Municipality tests the water in its distribution system.

This report and the Certificates of Analysis are available to the general public at the front counter of the Municipal Office at 460 Witt Road during office hours.

Quality Analysis

Water sampling was conducted by Claus Trost, Water Quality Analyst, Certificate number 12228, Morris Schneider, License # 13146 and Mark Zadow, License # 13145 The water samples were sent to Caduceon Laboratories Inc. in Ottawa for analysis. Caduceon is an ODWS Accredited laboratory. The results of the analysis are faxed back to the Municipality. The following chart is a summary of those test results.

Note #1

One sample, taken on June 3, 2008 at Valley Spring tested at 426 counts/ml on a Heterotrophic Plate Count. All the other samples tested less than 6 counts/ml.

Note #2

On April 7, 2008 the first distribution sample drawn for lead sampling was adverse. A resample was taken on April 22, 2008 which was not adverse. Either the hydrant was not flushed long enough or the fire hose used to direct the flush to proper drainage was contaminated.

Complaints

There were no complaints received in the second quarter of 2008

Staffing & Training

Laurentian Valley Waterworks has 1 Water Quality Analyst, 3 operators certified Water Distribution - Class 1 and 1 Operator in Training.

Construction

There was no new construction undertaken in the second quarter of 2008.

Maintenance

The interior parts of Hydrant #66 were replaced on April 16, 2008.
Five water meter chambers were pumped out on April 18, 2008 and on April 21 ball valves were installed to facilitate calibration of the meters. On April 23, ball valves were installed on the sixth water meter.

The fire hydrants were flushed during the last week of April and the first week of May, the hydrant valves were also exercised.
The main valves were exercised in early June.

On May 5, 2008 a service connection was repaired at 521 Lark Street.

On May 7, 2008 the seals were replaced on Hydrant # 66.

Flow Metrix was up to flow test the water meters on June 12, 2008. The small meter was replaced on the MacGregors Hill Meter.

Three new residential services and one Commercial-metered service where turned on in the second quarter of 2008.

Community Lead Testing

The required Municipal Lead Sampling was completed in the second quarter. There was one adverse sample as noted earlier. There were only 16 residential volunteers, the Water Works has filed the Request for Regulatory Relief from Lead Sampling Requirements in Schedule 15.1 of Regulation 170/03, Safe Drinking Water Act.

Ministry of the Environment

On June 20, 2009 the Laboratory Services Notification were updated and faxed to the Ministry.

The Municipality also received a letter from the Ministry on June 20 in preparation for the annual inspection of the water works.

The Municipality received the Pembroke Water Purification Plant 2007 Annual Compliance Report as required by O.Reg 170/03.

Summary

In the second quarter of 2008, the water works purchased 12,488,412 gallons of water from the City of Pembroke and distributed it to 604 homes and businesses. There was one incident of adverse water quality, (community lead sampling).
