Municipal Partnership in the Ottawa Valley Chooses to Walk Lightly on the Environment!

The Township of Laurentian Valley, in partnership with the Town of Petawawa, the City of Pembroke, The Township of North Algona - Wilberforce, and the Township of Bonnechere Valley (combined population of 40,000), is committed to the implementation of new diversion facilities to reduce the disposal of solid waste through landfilling and to provide a cost effective and environmentally friendly long-term waste management system with the assistance of it's consultants J.L. Richards & Associates Limited and Golder Associates Ltd.

The proposed facilities, which include a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), a Central Composting Facility, and a Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling Facility, will be implemented at the Alice & Fraser Landfill Site located in the Township of Laurentian Valley, approximately two hours north west of the National Capital.

The proposed waste management system is expected to increase the diversion rate in this combined urban/rural service area to approximately 65%, well above the 50% provincial objective.

Battery Recovery Program
The Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Center has started a household battery recovery program. This program makes it more convenient for you to dispose of your household batteries, ensuring these potentially hazardous products are kept out of the landfill site. Just bring your batteries to the Municipal Office and drop them in the Battery Tube. More sites for battery dropoffs will be announced in the future. - Read More

Design and Build Contracts for MRF and Composting Facility
In order to evaluate the technical and financial aspects of possible waste diversion facilities, detailed proposals were received from a short list of three pre-qualified contractors. The pre-qualified contractors were selected through a review of seven Expressions of Interest/Statements of Qualification received by the Township of Laurentian Valley. - Read More
Nine Options Considered
Nine waste management system options including the status quo were evaluated by determining the total anticipated capital and operating costs, the corresponding diversion rate, and the possible site life at the Alice & Fraser Landfill, assuming a total landfilling airspace of three million cubic metres (total of existing and future landfill volume). - Read More
Background
The existing waste management system consistes primarily of a curbside bluebox recycling program, backyard composting, and landfilling at the Alice & Fraser Waste Disposal Site. The remaining life at the Alice & Fraser Waste Disposal Site has been estimated to be less than four years. As a result, a number of municipalities formed a partnership in 1998 to develope and operate a long-term waste management system. - Read More
