Economic Development

The Township of Laurentian Valley has experienced unprecedented growth over the past few years. The increase in residential building permits, growth of the commercial power centre located southeast of the City of Pembroke and reinvestment and growth in the commercial development area along County Road 51 stretching westward from the boundary with the City of Pembroke, towards the Town of Petawawa, has helped to strengthen our dynamic community.

The proximity of CFB Petawawa in the adjacent Town of Petawawa, coupled with the proposed military and civilian personnel expansion at the Base, are factors that enhance the potential for the Township of Laurentian Valley to attract new economic development and/or retain and grow existing business and industry. The Township of Laurentian Valley is also situated in close commuting distance to the AECL facilities in Chalk River and Deep River. This together with the upcoming expansion and relocation of the Algonquin College Pembroke Campus to a new site in the adjacent City of Pembroke, make the Township an attractive location for persons employed at AECL and CFB Petawawa to reside, and also as a location for firms supporting advanced manufacturing and the nuclear industry, particularly along the Highway 17 corridor.

Economic development in the Township of Laurentian Valley also would have positive impacts on the surrounding community as opportunities are presented for complementary businesses and services, in this already strong, healthy and vibrant municipality.

LVP Broadband Initiative
Earlier this year, Laurentian Valley and Petawawa were pleased to announce that the Province of Ontario had chosen to partner on our Joint Local Broadband Infrastructure Project by approving our application for funding under the Rural Connections Program administered by OMAFRA. With the help of our high speed internet partner, Bell Aliant, Laurentian Valley and Petawawa will now be connected.

One-third of the approved eligible costs of the Laurentian Valley/Petawawa project will be funded by the Ontario government. The Project is eligible for $700,908 through the Rural Connections Broadband Program. Bell Aliant, our service provider partner, has committed to providing the remaining two thirds (2/3) of the capital funding.
The Bell Aliant proposal includes both DSL high speed wire-line Internet service to the municipalities? more populous regions and "Inukshuk" wireless service from existing Bell towers to areas beyond the reach of the DSL signal. It is anticipated that the project, once completed in 2010, would bring high speed Internet to the majority of homes and businesses in the community and cover 82% of the areas currently unserved in the two municipalities. Total cost for the project is estimated to be approximately two million dollars ($2,000,000).

The purpose of this webpage is to provide updates on the progress of this project and to provide a link to the LVP Broadband Initiative website currenly being developed by Bell. Once the LVP website is launched, interested persons will be able to enter their phone number to find out if they will be in an area proposed to be serviced by Bell under this program. The launch of this website link is anticipated in mid-January 2010. [Read More]
